The 3-R’s of Rehab and Recovery

Our physical bodies are controlled to a large extent by signals coming through our nervous system and mediated by our brain, hormones, and outside forces. When we were younger, we were educated and made more whole by the application of the 3-R’s: Reading, Writing, and Arithmetic; now, that we have grown older, wiser, more mature, and find ourselves put-down by the trips, traps, and trials of Life, it may be time to lean upon today’s updated version of the 3-R’s, where we get the chance to learn more about ourselves and be made more whole once again; the 3-R’s of Rehabilitation: Repetition, Rhythm, and Rhyme!!

REPETITION, is how we get better at what we do, what we want to do, perform, or perfect; think of learning to ride a bike, shoot a basket, knit, crochet, play pool, get out of bed, walk across the room, climb a flight of stairs, or whatever it is that we want to try and get better at; the only way to get there is through practice, repetition, and refinement. REPETITION, is the pathway to our desired destination of Mastery!!

RHYTHM, is represented by music, dancing, moving the hips, and the flutter of yellow leaves in the Fall; it is a natural out-pouring of our innermost being, intertwined with the external world; it is who we are. When we find out what it is that we like to do and begin to put our focus there, then all of the sudden our minds are opened up, our spirits are unlocked, and we become one with what it is that we are doing. I encourage my patients to move in the direction of their natural inclinations; some people like to walk, some like to ride a bike, some fish, some cook, some clean, some build, some tear down, and some yield to a higher calling. RHYTHM, is the spiral groove inscribed in the vinyl record of our Lives!!

RHYME, is the element of time, sequence, and poetic harmony, brought together in the absence of fear; for fear alone is enough to block and tackle the rhyme, whose only mission is to make light, tickle the funny bone, and bring about a chuckle, snort, or guffaw. To rhyme is to attempt to lay down the sword, lower the volume, put down the defenses, and mend the fences; it is fun, it is memorable, it makes friends, and it tends to build upon itself. RHYME, has the potential to be, just maybe, the time of our LIFE!!

Live it, Love it, Learn it, and repeat it; again, and again, and again, and again…
